A Tale of Two Cities: Denver and Colorado Springs

By Elizabeth Kirwin

Denver is the rec weed superstore capital of America.  Denver is where many out-of-staters are headed to imbibe in a weed habit.  I say, good for them, but why waste time and money paying outrageous recreational taxes?  When you can just get a medical card and pay 1/4 the price?  Does this make sense?

A tale of two cities is born.

Colorado Springs, because it is a military city, collectively decided not to allow recreational dispensaries within the city limits.  However, any number of medical dispensaries sprung up like mushrooms on the landscape.

Their prices were way better than the rec dispensaries of Northern Colorado. The only catch was you HAD to go ahead and make an appointment at a clinic and spend about$100 to get a medical card in Colorado.  (This seems like such a HUGE problem for so many hippies it makes me want to cry; I want to start an organization, free med cards to those in need).

Anyway, once you get that very special piece of paper from the State of Colorado, and you’ve kissed it like 1000 times, you can now take it to your favorite dispensary in town and make it YOUR home dispensary.  Every six months you can switch if you like. Every dispensary gives out so much swag and practically free weed and wax (you have to pay like a penny for a joint or $10 for an ounce, or 9.99 for 8 grams of wax), that the consumer is literally overwhelmed.

I asked myself why any resident of Colorado would put up with buying recreational weed?

That’s my tale of two cities!
